What you need to know at a glance….

Most vehicle owners must pay car tax, which can be purchased for periods covering six or twelve months. The DVLA will typically send out a V11 reminder when car tax is due.

How to renew your Car Tax or declare your car off the road (SORN):

You’ll need the reference number contained in one of the following:

  • A V11 or V85/1 reminder letter (16 digit reference number)
  • A V5C registration booklet, also known as the log book, in your name (11 digit reference number)
  • A V5C/2 new keeper supplement – if you’ve just bought the car (12 digit reference number)
  • A ‘last chance’ warning letter
